There’s a growing trend in boudoir photography and many brides, like myself, are curious though perhaps timid about doing boudoir in the first place. But after we saw their pirate shoot above, we HAD to interview Marissa, one of the stars over at Boudoir Divas to get some tips for shy but eager-to-try brides like me.
First, a little background on Marissa…
what was the catalyst that made you go from hobby to professional in photography?
I always knew that I wanted to be a business owner, even when I was little. When I fell in love with photography and realized that I could have the best of both worlds, I was ecstatic. It just goes to show that if you really believe in your dreams you can make them a reality. I guess all the cheesy quotes are true! As for Kimberlee, I know that she fell in love with photography for non-profits, telling peoples’ stories. It was that that made her realize that she needed to make her hobby a full-time reality.
why shoot boudoir? Are there elements in boudoir you find more fulfilling or excites you more than when you shot weddings?
I loved shooting weddings, but it wasn’t what I always dreamed of doing at all. In high school, when I fell in love with photography, I knew I wanted to take photos of women that made them feel beautiful, so as I got a little bit older that naturally went toward the direction of boudoir. So yea, for me, as much as I love befriending our wedding clients and getting to know them, I feel a huge sense of purpose when I photograph a woman and allow her to see herself in a new light.
Now to the pressing questions…
what advice do you have for the super shy brides that may be dying to do boudoir but don’t think they can do it?
That I understand! It took me 8 years of shooting boudoir before I had Kimberlee do a shoot for me. I was that nervous. But the fun you have during the shoot immediately pushes that fear out. I say just find a photographer who you feel you can trust and then do just that, commit and trust her. It will be extremely rewarding.
have you had any embarrassing moments doing a boudoir session?
I used to have embarrassing moments in every single boudoir shoot my first few years. It was always something random, like for instance when I was starting out and I was shooting in my old garage and a scorpion crawled out of the fuzzy rug she was on, or how about my very first session when I tried to shoot outside and the ladder I had been using blew over and fell on her head. Ha! Not sexy. I could go on and on.
do you have a lot of boudoir photos for your hubbies?!
For the first time I just gave my hubby a boudoir album for his b-day a few months ago. I knew he would like it but I didn’t quite realize how much he would looooovvveee it. It made me really comprehend just how happy I am making husbands out there.
any top tips on how to make the MOST out of your boudoir session?
I think the biggest thing is not to over-think it. Just have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously during the process. We tell our clients that “if you feel like a dork then you are probably doing it right.” With trying to be sexy in front of a photographer sometimes you have to fake it before you feel it
Thank you, Marissa, for all your awesome advice, encouragement, and, oh, for getting David to pose boudoir-style as well.
