Precious.
Unbelievable.
Amazing.
There’s nothing quite like that first year with your baby.
Capturing your baby is infinitely precious because it is capturing a piece of your heart.
With our DPARK family, we recommend not settling for cookie cutter Pinterest photos or images that don’t fit who you are as a family, what you love about your child or what you dream of for their photos.
Here are 7 tips we give our families to help inspire how to photograph their baby.
1 | Capture your favorite details
It flies by so quickly. When you hold your baby in your arms right now, what are your favorite details?
Marshmallow arms?
Soft hair?
Holding their tiny hands?
What milestones has your baby met that you’d love captured (i.e. smiling, sitting by themselves, crawling, first teeth)?
2 | Capture your favorite activities
What are your favorite moments during the day with your child? Is it rocking your baby to sleep? Is it making your child laugh by playing peekaboo? Is it playing with bubbles?
Enjoy the photoshoot. Be who you are as a family. Be together. Be in the moment.
Pick a place and experience that will do that for you.
3 | Schedule when and where your baby is most comfortable.
It’s good to schedule the shoot after your baby’s been fed and, in the case of a newborn, when the baby is deep asleep and their diaper was already changed.
We always recommend the home for baby shoots – everything is easily within grasp (and in case mommy needs to nurse or what not, it’s much simpler). It is also that much more meaningful because that’s where your baby’s home is especially in that first year!
Make sure the room(s) where you want the baby photographed is comfortable. The ideal room has great window lighting coming in without being too bright/strong on your child.
Have your baby dressed in something that can easily be taken off when it’s time for photos to start with those adorable naked baby shots!
4 | Be prepared
Have bibs, diapers, wipes and extra clothes ready just in case an accident happens. Have fun props and changing pads that can hide the diapers if needed.
Have the areas where you want photographed cleaned and tidied up.
5 | Props
What are your baby’s favorite toys or nursery theme?
What comfortable colorful blankets can you use?
What item would you like to use to show your baby growing as you photograph them month to month or year to year? Some families use hands, baskets, measuring sticks, toys or whatever has special meaning for them to help compare the baby’s size as he or she grows.
6 | DRESS up!
We recommend at least 3 looks with babies: naked, in diapers, and then dressed up!
It’s an excuse to shop for that one adorable outfit or accessory that’ll pop.
AND it’s a good time for the parents to dress up and get some cute photos of everyone too! And by dress up, even cute PJs are perfect – cozy and can be perfect for your family. All depends on who you are 🙂
7 | Enjoy
Baby photos are actually one of the most work, especially if you’re still recovering from delivery. So be sure to just relax and enjoy the moment and let your photographer take the lead. Be sure to try to give yourselves time to nap beforehand if possible or right after! No matter what happens, you’ll be getting precious photos of a time that goes by way too quickly.
