Blessed to share with you this absolutely beautiful couple, two modern day romantics, and their FANTASTIC carnival inspired Plaza at Cabrillo Marina San Pedro wedding.
love story (from the bride)
We met at an event for new LMU students towards the very end of high school. I felt awkward since I didn’t know anyone else there – and, of course, Byron was surrounded by a ton of girls. I bravely forced myself to join in and introduce myself. Thank God he made it easy by telling a bunch of hilarious stories about his then “extra dramatic” girlfriend (absolutely my favorite part of this story).
We stayed in contact that summer and quickly learned we disagreed on just about everything. We confused each other: I was the stereotypical honors student and Byron was (is?) the bad boy with a sports car. We became attached at the hip from the first week of school and spent all of college dissecting every topic imaginable. Somewhere in there we realized that all our late night discussions were not only making us grow up, but grow closer together. We’ve been driving each other crazy ever since!
romantic proposal (from the groom)
I began planning the proposal months out thinking about how to wow the girl I love. When we first met I was the guy with a fast red car always ready for an adventure, so I decided the next step obviously was to get into an old WW2 red fighter plane and propose in the air to symbolize taking our relationship to the next level… Well, that was the idea anyway.
When the day came I had planned everything to a T. She leaves for a big board meeting but gets interrupted by a message that there is an angry client on the phone she needs to handle NOW. So she walks out of the meeting room and there I am sitting in her office ready to whisk her away. I ask her “Well aren’t you ready to go?” She’s still in work mode and worried about handling the angry client. I tell her I don’t feel angry and as the confusion wore off she got excited and I rushed her into the car and we were off on our adventure.
About half way down to San Diego my plans blew up in my face (almost literally). I got a call from the airplane people that the plane was out of commission because of ‘engine troubles’- apparently a piston had blown through the engine and it would take them a week to get it repaired. Well that certainly put a wrench into my plans. So I finished the call and my heart started to race as I had to come up with plan B. Of course Andi started asking questions about what was going on, and trying to guess where we were going. We took a rest stop at a book store where I stepped outside and frantically made calls searching for an equivalent emergency proposal plan. Nothing was good enough, so I decided to go the sentimental route instead.
We end up spending a nice ditch day in San Diego and make our way back to LA in the middle of rush hour. My new master plan is to propose at LMU where we met and started our relationship. To try and keep it a surprise I have her blindfold herself while we’re still 45 minutes south of LA. No matter what I say to throw her off, she’s convinced that we’re heading to campus. Once we arrive I guide her in and out of planters, onto random grassy areas, up a hill, and down steps to try and throw her off the scent.
We finally arrive at the bluff next to the library. It is the moment of truth. So I face her towards the city, kneel down and tell her she can finally undo her blindfold. I can feel the tension in the air with that feeling of HERE IT COMES – when she tells me I have to take off the blindfold myself, since I made her put it on! I rise, take off the blindfold and drop to my knee again and ask her to marry me. She tears up and instantly says yes but doesn’t reach for the ring… I finally ask why and she says that she can’t see anything yet after being blindfolded for so long. As I stand up to hug her both of us start crying. We hold each other and I ask if she can see so I can get back down on my knee and propose again. Can you believe it? Two proposals in one night, man she is lucky! And as they say the rest is history.
