What to Look For in Your Wedding Photographer Part 2 | Night Photography

August 24, 2011 by D. Park Photography 4 Comments

Part 2 of our series:

What should you look for in your wedding photographer?

Announcing our new series to help couples find the perfect wedding photographer for them. The inside scoop on what to look for and what to avoid when selecting your ideal wedding photographer.

PART 2 | NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

This

…is IMPORTANT

There’s lots of criteria in picking a wedding photographer but this is an important technical MUST-HAVE.

Can the photographer photograph well at night (and maybe even when they are only indoors with almost no windows)?

If you take a look around at any photographer’s website and portfolio, check out their night photos.  You may start to notice that some photographers won’t post any of them.  There are some who only specialize in natural lighting.

It is KEY to get a photographer who can photograph all your special moments, details and everything inbetween at night!  So here’s what to look out for when you start to look around.

1 | Does the photographer’s portfolio show night photographs?

2 | Do people’s skin tones look normal or are they too orange/yellow?

3 | Can they capture colors at night?  Or does it look like they may only shoot in black and white for the reception or at night?

4 | Do they have clarity or is it too much motion blur (and not in an obvious artistic way but in a they-really-don’t-know-how-to-shoot-at-night way)?

5 | Can they photograph the special fabulous lighting in your room?

6 | Can they photograph all the little details in dark lighting?

7 | Can they capture all the energetic dances and performances at night?

When we first began in photography, we learned from mentors who taught us to learn how to shoot at night first because of how difficult it is.  In fact, night photography can be one of the most difficult aspects of wedding photography in general.  That’s why we have to mention to you how important it is because a LOT of weddings are done at night!

It’s our priority to know (and to be able to show) how to shoot your wedding right at any time of day.  Make sure it’s your photographer’s priority to do the same.

Stay tuned.  More tips on how to pick the right wedding photographer for you coming soon.

Excellent night shots! Very impressed. I like the colors in the first photo, the purple/pink colors. Good capture.
